Interesting development at amazon.com

If you go to amazon's home page, you'll see a letter from Jeff Bezos announcing something called Amazon Prime, a $79 yearly membership which gets you unlimited 2-day shipping on most anything you buy on amazon.

What do you think, tender nibblets of the sea? A fantastic opportunity for more immediate consumer gratification, or just another way of getting FLEECED by the man?

don't think it's ever takin much longer than that to get anything i've ordered. and at 1 or 2 items per year, i'd be getting fleeced.

I loves me my Amazon, but there's no way I currently spend $80 a year on shipping alone. And the whole 2-day thing is a scam, akin to "undercoating" on your new car. It's usually there in two days anyhow and is that possible one day delay ALWAYS worth an extra $5-$10?

I ordered the first Cocktail Slippers cd from this Norwegian indie label -- had to convert dollars to kroner to figure out how much it cost -- and got it in three days. (Fortunately, Norwegian for "Visa" is "Visa," and they put a picture of the CD up on the shopping cart, so I was reasonably sure I was ordering the CD and not agreeing to sponsor the band's US tour.)

There's another way to look at this.

Let's say person A buys 30 things on Amazon every year with Standard Shipping (7-10 business days) @ $2.95/shipment spending a a total of $88.50 in shipping/year. Obviously, had Person A gone with the Amazon Prime, she would have saved herself $9.50 and been forever grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Prime Program AND had all of her purchases at her door in less than 3 days!! Clearly, peace of mind, courtesy of Mr. Bezos.

Mr. Bezos would then want to thank Person A for spending over $1000 at Amazon per year in the first place.

Ah, if only I hadn't already bought those $79 lucite thongs...

In seriousness, I NEVER pay for Amazon shipping. I will go out of my way to order some tongs or something to bump up my purchases to $25 to get the magical super saver shipping. Of course, that means that if you expect a birthday gift from me, it will most likely be above $25.

If you want a birthday gift from me, you'd better be nice to me NOW. heh heh.
